A first-then board is an intervention to help people complete tasks they might not want to. Its a type of visual schedule. It gives people a visual of what they have to do and what comes next. The "first" is always something they HAVE TO do. The "then" part is always something they get as a form of reward for completing the task.
Note*
It is important to keep in mind that when using a first-then board, even if it takes the person a long time or they engage in problem behaviors, that the "then" part is honored AFTER they complete the task. Especially when they are starting to use/learn the first-then board. The purpose is to show them that once they complete something they dont want to do, they will get something they like. Eventually, the person will learn and complete the task quickly to get to the "then" part (as long as the "then" option is what they really want. Allow the person to select the "then" option for more motivation.
A Token System is a reward system. Tokens are given for correct responses or appropriate behavior.
Tokens consist of primary and secondary reinforcers.
1. Primary reinforcers- A natural reinforcer
2. Secondary reinforcers- A contrived reinforcer that you trade for a primary reinforcer
Real Life Example:
-When you go to work you earn money (secondary reinforcer). --When you go to the store you trade your secondary reinforcer for a soda (primary reinforcer)
To use for task completion:
Give a token for completing the task correctly and independently IMMEDIATELY AFTER the task is completed. Once
the learner earns all their tokens, they get what they worked for.
To use for behavior:
Give a token for a pre-determined amount of time (i.e., 5 minutes) of following the rules IMMEDIATELY AFTER the time interval. Make sure the rules are clear and concise. Once the learner earns all their tokens, they get what they worked for.
Note*
If the learner is new to token boards, start with a lower number of tokens (like the 3 spot token board) and then move up from there as the learner gets used to work for tokens.
Select the tokens that the learner likes best from the selections in the token board icons PDF.
