Parent training gives the parent the opportunity to be the facilitator int their child's progress. The parent can also designate a facilitator to be trained, such as a family member or a childcare provider. ABA parent training is separated into two parts; the parent and BCBA alone, and the parent and child (with BCBA guidance). Parents will learn ABA foundation knowledge, techniques, and strategies to better help the child. In collaboration with the BCBA, the parent will be able to create and implement a behavior plan, collect data, and manage the plan based on data and observations.
"Families do better when parents/carers have the opportunity to work in partnership with professionals to learn more about their child’s autism, behavior management techniques and how to teach new skills" (Brereton & Tonge 2005).
ABA therapy is an evidence based approach. It is most popularly known as the most effective treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ABA therapy works to eliminate maladaptive behaviors that impede learning, while building skills in areas people are deficient in using positive reinforcement. ABA therapy is tailored specifically for the needs of your child, and takes your family's culture and needs into consideration. This therapy may be used in many settings such as home, school, and out in the community. ABA therapy can help with social skills, communication, toileting, hygiene, academics, and more. It is most effective when it is applied in doses of more than 20 hours a week and begins before the age of 4.
"The functional behavior assessment (FBA) is a systematic method of assessment for obtaining information about the purposes a problem behavior serves for a person; results are used to guide the design of an intervention for decreasing the problem behavior and increasing appropriate behavior" (Cooper, Heron, Heward, 2020).
FBAs are specific to the environment and should be conducted for each environment in which a person is engaging in problem behaviors. FBAs can be provided for the home, church, school, and IEP meeting participation is available if necessary.
